Improvisational Portraits

Sometimes the work is simply an exploration of painting, sometimes I’m trying to tease out some humanity from all the noise. Through this work, I’m looking at the frayed edges of our perception, our distance and connection—the vulnerability and beauty of being an individual in the world, and the challenges of being together.

Over the past six years these portraits have touched on many ideas and themes. This process has been both a respite and a challenge, deep work and comfort. I let go of rules and explored within the confines of a simple figure. I played with textures, tools, and time. I’ve met myself in new ways in the process. I’ve seen lost friends and shadows of unmet others; reflections of me, and of us.

I hope you see something familiar here too; a reflection of something uniquely human.
